Imphal, Oct 20:
The Joint Non-Governmental Voluntary Organization (JNGVO) has firmly opposed any plans to reverse the status of Kakching district. In a meeting held at the Library and Information Centre, JNGVO Advisor P. Somarendra emphasized that Kakching’s designation as a district, achieved on 8th December 2016, was the result of long-standing efforts, and undoing it would harm local development and governance.
Somarendra highlighted that Kakching had witnessed significant improvements in infrastructure, including the establishment of administrative facilities, staff quarters, and postal services. The organization expressed concerns that a rollback would disrupt ongoing development and affect essential public services. JNGVO also emphasized the need to resolve border disputes and prevent census mismanagement by clearly defining the district’s boundaries.
As Kakching is home to diverse communities, JNGVO asserted that the district plays a critical role in promoting social harmony and sustainable development. With discussions ongoing about district reorganizations, the organization warned that dissolving Kakching’s status would risk igniting new tensions. They called for solutions to be implemented through dialogue rather than disruptive administrative changes.
JNGVO further urged officials to maintain Kakching’s identity and administrative structure during the upcoming tripartite talks on 15th November in Senapati, where district boundary issues will be discussed. They stressed that the rollback of any district created in 2016 would be unacceptable and appealed to the government to prioritize stability. “Kakching must remain a district,” Somarendra reiterated, emphasizing that the community would resist any adverse decisions.
