Ignorance of legal rights leaves women vulnerable: MSCW

Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), Th. Tiningpham Monsang, has stressed the need to strengthen legal awareness among women, stating that many victims of violence and abuse fail to seek justice because they are unaware of the legal rights and protections available to them.

She was addressing a Legal Awareness Programme organised by the Manipur State Commission for Women in collaboration with the National Commission for Women at Ima Panthoibi Community Hall, Pangantabi Makha Leikai, Kakching district.

Speaking on the occasion, Th. Tiningpham Monsang said women in the state continue to face various forms of abuse, including domestic violence, physical assault, mental harassment and other forms of exploitation. While several laws have been enacted to safeguard the rights of women and provide legal remedies, many victims remain unaware of these provisions, making it difficult for them to access justice.

She said creating greater awareness of legal rights is essential to empower women to seek protection under the law and to enable them to respond effectively to incidents of violence and discrimination.

The programme was attended by Sk. Sophia, Member of the Manipur State Commission for Women; W. Phajatombi, MCS, Member Secretary of MSCW; Khaling Mithourong, Additional Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Manipur; the Cluster Coordinator of Langmeidong Block under the Manipur State Rural Livelihoods Mission (MSRLM); and Moirangthem Amubi, President of Anouba Mangal Village Level Federation, Pangantabi.

As part of the programme, legal experts delivered awareness sessions on important legislations relating to the protection of women. Advocate Dr. Ch. Narendra spoke on The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, Advocate Thiyam Rajkishore explained key provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), while Darngam Khaling, Member Secretary of the Child Welfare Committee, Tengnoupal District, delivered a presentation on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act and the provisions relating to free legal aid under the Legal Services Authorities Act.
