Imphal, April 19:
Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, an advocate and member of the All India Congress Committee, has revealed that heavy security has been deployed at his residence following growing concerns about his safety. The increased security comes after Meitei submitted an urgent letter to key state authorities, including the Manipur Governor, the Chief Secretary, and the Director General of Police (DGP), requesting immediate action against the spread of false rumors linking him to an unrelated case involving an alleged audio tape in the Supreme Court of India. He also sought protection for his life and property under the Fundamental Rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
In a statement, Meitei confirmed that after holding a press conference at Congress Bhavan in Imphal, he visited several offices, including the Raj Bhavan, Old Secretariat, DGP’s office, and the Chief Secretary’s residence, to submit his letter. Meitei expressed concern over the ongoing misinformation campaign, which he claims is being spread by the BJP and its allies, and called for an immediate halt to the rumors targeting both him and the Congress party.
While Meitei has not yet received a response from the Governor’s office, the DGP promptly acknowledged his letter. Meitei also mentioned that he was preparing to escalate the matter by writing to the President of India, the Prime Minister, and the Union Home Minister. Additionally, he intends to address the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in this regard.
The deployment of heavy security at Meitei’s residence has been seen as a precautionary measure in light of the volatile situation. The move underscores the serious concerns about public safety, especially given the potential for rumors to incite mob violence in the already troubled state of Manipur.
Meitei reiterated the need for the state government to take decisive action to curb the spread of fake news, particularly on social media, to ensure peace and stability in Manipur. He expressed confidence that under President’s Rule, the Rule of Law would prevail and that the rights and safety of citizens would be protected in accordance with the Constitution.
