Imphal, Dec 18:

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has submitted an urgent memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, as part of the larger nationwide Raj Bhawan Chalo campaign by Congress, demanding immediate action to restore peace and normalcy in the state. The memorandum, signed by MPCC President K. Meghachandra Singh and Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) K. Ranjit Singh, highlights the ongoing violence, curfews, and lawlessness that have plagued many parts of Manipur for the past 19 months.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee under the leadership of Keisham Meghachandra Singh, President, Manipur PCC, Gaikhangam ,CWC, Ranjit Singh, Deputy CLP, Th. Lokeshwar Singh, former Speaker & Chief whip of Congress legislature and MLA, Surjakumar Okram organised “ Raj Bhawan Chalo “at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.
The Congress party criticized both the central and state BJP-led governments for their failure to manage the crisis. Despite the severity of the situation, the memorandum pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has yet to visit Manipur, further compounding the sense of neglect, while Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has failed to take effective action to restore peace.
Among the key demands made by Congress is the immediate resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have been forced to flee their homes due to the ethnic violence. Thousands of people remain displaced, and Congress called on the Governor to ensure their safe return to their homes. The party also urged for the establishment of a secure system that would allow free movement between the valley and hill areas, where ethnic tensions have made travel dangerous.
The Congress leaders emphasized the urgent need for improved security across the state. The ongoing violence has created an atmosphere of fear, preventing normal life from resuming. Congress called for decisive action to restore law and order, warning that the crisis is not only impacting the local population but could also pose a broader threat to national stability.
As part of their nationwide campaign, Congress leaders across the country participated in the ‘Chalo Raj Bhavan’ protests on December 18, 2024. The protests demanded a discussion on two key issues: the ongoing violence in Manipur and the indictment of industrialist Gautam Adani by a US court. Congress leaders raised concerns about how the allegations against Adani were damaging the country’s image and called for Prime Minister Modi’s intervention in Manipur’s crisis.
In Manipur, Congress submitted the memorandum to the Governor, accusing both the central and state governments of failing to address the violence that has caused widespread displacement and loss of life. Despite the severity of the situation, Congress pointed out that Prime Minister Modi has not yet visited the state, highlighting the government’s indifference to the unrest.
In addition to the protests in Manipur, Congress leaders participated in similar demonstrations across India. In Hyderabad, Telangana Congress Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, along with his colleagues and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, marched from the Indira Gandhi statue near Hussain Sagar Lake to the Raj Bhavan. In Patna, Bihar, police stopped Congress workers from marching toward the Raj Bhavan. In Jammu, Congress workers protested against both the Adani indictment and the ongoing violence in Manipur, demanding that Prime Minister Modi address the situation in the northeastern state.
Protests were also held in Kerala, where Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan, along with state Congress president K. Sudhakaran, led a march to the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. Similar protests were reported in Andhra Pradesh and Uttarakhand, with Congress leaders emphasizing the need for urgent action to resolve the violence in Manipur and address concerns over Adani’s legal issues.
In Jammu, Congress workers were confronted by police as they attempted to march toward the Raj Bhavan. The protesters expressed their frustration over the BJP’s support for Adani and the failure to restore peace in Manipur. Police quickly intervened, confining the Congress members inside their office by closing the gates, which only intensified the frustration among the demonstrators.
