Imphal, Sept 22:
The Federation of Civil Society (FOCS), along with its 16 affiliated organizations, has strongly condemned a viral audio that surfaced on social media on September 18, which aims to disrupt the longstanding ties between the Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities. Angom Punil Kumar, General Secretary of FOCS, highlighted the historical significance of the Meitei Pangal, who have lived alongside the Meiteis for generations and participated in key historical events such as the Seven Years’ Devastation and the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
During a press conference held at their office in Kakwa, Angom Punil Kumar urged the government to take appropriate action against the perpetrators, regardless of their community affiliation. He expressed concern for the Meitei Pangal community, stating, “While this may hurt the Meitei Pangal, I appeal for understanding and reconciliation. It’s crucial to include the history of the Meitei Pangal in academic syllabi, as ignorance of their history may have contributed to this incident. The Meitei Pangal is actively supporting the current efforts for peace and stability in Manipur, and we should focus on strengthening our unity rather than allowing divisions.”
Baboi Korimayum from the Manipur Muslim Welfare Organisation (MMWO) echoed these sentiments, stating, “We must not jeopardize the love and bonds between the Meitei and Meitei Pangal communities. It’s essential to avoid such irresponsible acts in the future, whether they stem from ignorance or personal interests. The Meitei Pangal have lived peacefully in the region since the 15th century, and this enduring relationship should not be disturbed by external influences at any cost.”
