Imphal, Nov 14:
A 27-year-old man, identified as Waikhom Sanaton, was found dead with two gunshot wounds in the Yaralpat wetland area under the jurisdiction of Porompat Police Station in Imphal East on Thursday morning. His body was discovered by early morning walkers at around 5:30 am.
Upon receiving the emergency report, a team from Porompat Police Station and forensic experts rushed to the site. After an examination, Waikhom Sanaton’s body was sent to JNIMS Hospital for post-mortem.
Local residents reported hearing three gunshots around 2 am on Thursday, leading police to believe the man may have been abducted from another location before being killed. The police have registered a case and are conducting an investigation.
A statement from the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF), claiming responsibility for the killing, alleges that the man was involved in the rape threatening her with a knife and attempted murder of a 14-year-old girl by hitting her with a brick on November 1, 2024.
The group claims it “executed him as punishment for these crimes on 13 November.”
The police are continuing their investigation into the matter and have not yet independently verified the group’s claims.
