Imphal, Nov 6:
In a recent press briefing at Congress Bhawan, Hareshwar Goshwami, Chief Spokesperson of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), expressed strong disapproval of a controversial statement made by Mizoram’s Chief Minister Lalduhoma. The Congress leader accused the CM’s remarks of undermining the unity and integrity of both India and Manipur.
The controversy stems from comments made by Lalduhoma addressing a Kuki diaspora gathering in the United States on September 4, 2024. Lalduhoma reportedly declared his support for uniting Kuki people under a single leadership and nationhood, even if it meant transcending the existing borders between India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. He described the Kukis as “one people—brothers and sisters—unjustly divided under three different governments,” a sentiment that has sparked concerns about the intentions behind such statements.
The statement has been formally endorsed by Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) of Mizoram lending it the weight of an official stance.
In response, Hareshwar Goshwami condemned the statement as “unfortunate” and claimed that it mirrors past remarks from Bangladeshi ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who allegedly spoke of creating a separate, Christian-majority nation for the Kuki people.
“This statement goes against everything we stand for as a country united under a parliamentary democracy. It’s a clear attempt to stir divisive sentiments,” Hareshwar Goshwami told reporters. He also raised concerns about the BJP’s response, questioning why neither the state government nor the central government has taken action against such declarations. “Is this a deliberate attempt to further divide people in the valley?” he asked.
The Congress spokesperson reiterated his party’s commitment to upholding India’s unity and parliamentary democracy, calling on the government to address what he described as an alarming threat to national integrity. “Why is the BJP, at both the state and central levels, staying silent?” Goshwami demanded, emphasizing the urgency of a united front against divisive rhetoric that could jeopardize the social fabric of the region.
