Ahmedabad, April 9:
The Indian National Congress strongly criticised the BJP-led Central Government for its continued inaction and silence over the ongoing crisis in Manipur during its 84th All India Congress Committee (AICC) Session held in Ahmedabad. The two-day national convention, themed “Nyaypath: Sankalp, Samarpan aur Sangharsh” (Path of Justice: Resolution, Dedication, and Struggle), marked the first AICC session in Gujarat in over six decades.
Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and others, voiced serious concern over the deteriorating situation in Manipur, which has remained in turmoil for nearly two years. Rahul Gandhi, who has visited Manipur three times since the violence erupted, contrasted his efforts with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s complete absence from the state.
“The Prime Minister has not stepped foot in Manipur during its darkest hours. Instead, the extension of President’s Rule in the state was passed in Parliament at midnight without a single meaningful debate,” said Rahul Gandhi. He further added that the silence from the PMO was not just negligence but a grave injustice to the people of Manipur.
N. Bhupenda, a senior leader from the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), reiterated that the Centre’s failure to address the crisis has only worsened the situation. “What we are witnessing is a collapse of democratic responsibility. The Centre has turned its back on Manipur, leaving its people to suffer in silence,” he stated during his address.
The convention also highlighted that the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, which started from Manipur and is set to culminate in Mumbai, is symbolic of the Congress party’s commitment to restore justice, equality, and unity across the country. “Manipur was chosen as the starting point of the Yatra because it reflects the deep wounds inflicted by state apathy and neglect,” said Kharge.
Held on the banks of the Sabarmati River, between the historic Sabarmati Ashram and Kochrab Ashram, the AICC session drew participation from top Congress leaders nationwide. It served not only as a strategic platform ahead of upcoming elections but also as a reminder of the party’s ideological roots and its commitment to democratic values.
