Imphal, April 16:
Khuraijam Athouba, the Convenor of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), made a strong statement alleging that the Indian government has shown no interest in ending the ongoing violence in Manipur. In a press conference, Athouba highlighted how mainstream media attempts to divert attention from the core issue, with references to Chinese influence in the region, as reported by the Asian Age. He argued that these reports were an effort to sidestep the real problems the state is facing.
In light of the escalating situation, COCOMI is organizing a series of mass awareness campaigns, starting tomorrow. The initiative will include meetings across various localities, where community leaders will join to discuss the crisis. COCOMI will send resource persons to assist in organizing these meetings and has called on local leaders to take responsibility for hosting discussions in their areas.
Athouba expressed deep concern over the government’s actions, stating, “The Indian government cannot take us to wherever they like, and this issue remains unresolved. Today, the government has failed to ensure the rights of the people guaranteed in the Constitution.” He went on to criticize the silence of both the state and central governments, accusing them of neglecting their duties to address the deteriorating situation.
Furthermore, Athouba raised alarms about areas in Manipur where movement is severely restricted, yet the Indian government has failed to implement any sanitization programs or effective measures to ensure safety. COCOMI also expressed its frustration over the lack of action against the Narco-Terrorist groups operating along the Myanmar border. The groups, who are allegedly in suspension of operations, continue to thrive, with COCOMI claiming that the Indian government is indirectly supporting these activities.
As the crisis continues to unfold, COCOMI emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about the situation and the government’s role in the ongoing conflict. The organization remains committed to highlighting the core issues of the crisis through these community meetings, believing that the people of Manipur deserve to fully understand the gravity of the situation.
The awareness campaign will begin tomorrow, with more than a dozen meetings scheduled across the state.
