COCOMI criticizes government policies, calls for resolving Manipur’s issues

Imphal, Jan 19:

The Co-ordinator of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Thokchom Somorendro, has alleged that the Indian government’s policies in Manipur are influenced by ulterior motives tied to regional projects and international dynamics. Addressing a gathering, he highlighted the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project as a key factor shaping the government’s actions in the region.
Somorendro claimed that the government is attempting to align with Kuki militants to advance its strategic goals while suppressing other armed movements in the state. He accused the government of exploiting ethnic divides under a “divide and rule” policy, citing the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with armed groups that were not directly in conflict with the state.
He further alleged that the push for a separate Kuki administration is tied to poppy cultivation and the narcotics trade. Quoting a professor from Jawaharlal Nehru University, he suggested that certain factions within the government might be benefiting from the drug trade.
Highlighting historical grievances, he stated that the merger of Manipur with India violated the Instrument of Accession and ignored resolutions passed by the Manipur Assembly, leading to armed insurgencies.
To resolve the ongoing crisis, COCOMI asserted that the core issue stems from the perception of Manipur as an occupied territory rather than a sovereign state. They called for a military crackdown on Kuki militants who are violating the country’s laws, emphasizing the need for unified efforts to safeguard Manipur’s integrity.
