Imphal, April 16:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) joined the nationwide protest called by the Indian National Congress against what it alleged to be a politically motivated move by the Modi Government. The protest comes in the wake of the recent seizure of assets related to the National Herald and the filing of chargesheets against senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
MPCC President K. Meghachandra strongly condemned the government’s action, terming the chargesheets as an act of political vendetta. The protest was staged in front of the Enforcement Directorate’s office in Imphal.
CLP Leader, currently under suspension, stated that the MPCC and its members fully oppose what they termed as the undemocratic conduct of the Modi Government. He added that all legal matters would be contested in the court of law.
Senior party leaders including former MP Dr. T. Meinya, ex-MLA Sharat, Bhupenda, and other prominent Congress figures were present at the protest.
The MPCC echoed the AICC’s position, describing the government’s actions as “draconian” and an attempt to politically intimidate the opposition. The circular issued by the MPCC called on Congress Legislature Party leaders, former legislators, and members of frontal organizations to actively participate in the protest.
Party representatives said that this moment demanded collective resistance to defend truth, uphold democracy, and confront what they described as tyranny.
Earlier, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal had issued a circular condemning the government’s move, calling it a misuse of state power and a direct attack on democratic principles. He asserted that the Congress would not stay silent and had urged all Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) and leaders at all levels to organize protests at Enforcement Directorate offices and Central Government offices across districts on April 16.
