Imphal, Sept 27:
Though child marriage in Manipur is not as alarming compared to other states, there are still significant reported cases, and the public must be aware of the Prevention of Child Marriage Act. This was highlighted by Keisham Pradipkumar, Chairperson of the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR), during a One-Day State-Level Sensitization cum Consultation Workshop on Preventing Child Marriage in Manipur. The event, held at the Manipur Press Club, was jointly organized by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and MCPCR.
Pradipkumar pointed out that the nature of child marriage cases in Manipur differs from other states. While many child marriages in other parts of India involve children below the legal marriage age, in Manipur, the issue often revolves around early marriages involving girls under 18 and boys under 21. He noted that such marriages frequently occur due to elopement, which can lead to legal consequences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act if either party files a complaint.
Thoubal district reports the highest number of early marriage cases in the state, followed by Imphal West and Bishnupur districts. The MCPCR Chairperson emphasized that, in the current crisis, with around 25,000 children in relief camps, it is crucial to conduct awareness programs to educate people on the legal and health implications of child marriage.
“Education is one of the most effective ways to prevent child marriage,” Pradipkumar stressed. He added that early marriage often impacts the health of young mothers and can lead to crises due to their emotional and physical immaturity.
The workshop aims to raise awareness and encourage community involvement in curbing child marriage in the state.
