In a bid to ensure safety and to avoid catastrophe, locals have prevented plying of heavy vehicles at Chakabama in Nagaland thereby affecting movement of goods laden vehicles along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2).
The worsening situation prompted the locals to block the Chakabama bypass route, which serves as the only connecting line between Manipur and other states after landslide at Phesama and Kuima in Nagaland, in order to prevent further landslide and sinking of roads.
Around 5 heavy vehicles were stuck at the bypass route due to the recent inclement weather. Several buses and trucks have remained stranded along the highway since the landslide.
A villager of Chakabama told Imphal Times that the inclement weather has slowed down the rebuilding efforts at the landslide affected areas along the National Highway-2. Even the temporary bypass route at Chakabama is in critical condition as large portion of the area have been sunk. As a measure to prevent another catastrophe villagers have decided to prevent passing of heavy vehicles.
A driver identified as Rajen said that the condition worsened in the last few days and the villagers are fearful of another landslide at Chakabama. However, light and passenger vehicles are allowed to pass though the bypass route.
Highlighting the hardships faced by people, he also requests the concern authority to look into the situation and take necessary actions as soon as possible.
