A Two-Day National Seminar On “Assessment of Higher Educational Institutions By NAAC: Problems & Prospects” Held

Inaugural function of two-day national seminar on “Assessment of Higher Educational Institutions by NAAC: Problems & Prospects” organized by Maharaja Bodhchandra College, Palace Compound Imphal and sponsored by Directorate of University & Higher Education, Government of Manipur was held yesterday.
The inaugural function of the seminar was attended Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, Minister, Education, Labour & Employment, Government of Manipur as Chief Guest, Prof. Arun Kumar, Dean, School of Human & Environmental Science, Director, IQAC, Manipur University, Dr. A. Bimol Akoijam, Assc. Prof. Dept. of Sociology & Technical Education, JNU, New Delhi, and Lourembam Iboyaima Singh, Joint Director, Higher & Technical Education Govt. of Manipur as Guests of Honour respectively.  Prof. Adya Prasad Pandey, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University presided over the function.
Prof. Adya Prasad Pandey, Vice-Chancellor of Manipur University, addressing the presidential speech, said that India plays a very important role as far as the quality of education is concerned. To improve the quality of education, the Govt. of India has already initiated several reforms in the higher education sector which encompass not only governance reforms in the institutions but also in the regulatory structures of the higher education system. A society can be changed by the facilities and benefits given by the higher education like research work, professionalization and skill development etc. Professor delved on the aspects and areas of improving the quality of higher education and said, assessment and accreditation of institutions of higher education will certainly enhance quality of higher education in Manipur.
Professor observed about the process of NAAC accreditation while asserting that Manipur University and Internal Quality Assessment Cell, IQAC will extend all the possible support for NAAC accreditation & assessment to the colleges of Manipur. He conveyed the compliments received from different parts of the world for all the excellent works done for the historic event, 105th Indian Science Congress, which was successfully organized by Manipur University.
Hon’ble Minister, Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, delivering the Chief Guest’s speech said teachers and students should know the process and procedure of NAAC assessment. Minister highlighted about equity, accessibility and quality which are the key factors of quality education. He alos briefed about NAAC and its significance on bringing quality in education and accessibility.  He also highlighted about the condition of higher education in Manipur for not having regular teachers. Quality of education lies on the teachers and students of the institute, he said.  
Dr. Mairembam Chandra Singh, Principal of the Maharaja Bodhchandra College, delivered the keynote address. He observed about the quality assessment, vision, problems and prospects of higher educational institutes. He also touched upon the process of NAAC assessment and accreditation with meticulous delivery on the seven criteria of NAAC Assessment.
Dr. R.K Indira, Covenor of the organizing committee delivered the concept note of the seminar. She narrated about the past assessment of MB College by NAAC and also announced the names of the resource persons of the seminar and the areas of their presentations.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Lourembam Iboyaima Singh said out of 73 colleges of Manipur, 22 colleges have been accessed by NAAC. Colleges are ignorant and careless about NAAC, he said while urging all the teachers to be ready and prepared for the NAAC assessment of all the colleges in the near future.
Dr. A. Bimol Akoijam, drawing the attention of gathering stated why our parents are willing to send their children outside despite having 73 colleges in Manipur. No state can develop until and unless the educational system of the state is developed, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. S. Dorendrajit said it is mandatory for colleges to get accredited by NAAC. We have to introspect on how many students are willing to study here, he added. He stressed on the ‘Diversity of Students’, which is one of the important areas of NAAC assessment. The quality of education of the state needs to be discussed and debated thoroughly, he added.
Prof. Arun Kumar, urged the education minister to develop some mechanism to ensure that all the colleges of Manipur get accredited and assessed by NAAC. Professor recollected about the NAAC accreditation of Manipur University. Educational institutes must ensure the worthiness of the students and they should get more exposures through seminars and workshops, said professor while applauding the students of Manipur for their academic achievements.
There will be two Academic Sessions during this seminar which will be chaired by L. Randhoni Devi, Ex-Principal, Imphal College and Prof. S. Dorendrajit Singh, Director IQAC, Manipur University on 26th & 27th respectively. Each session consists of four themes which will be deliberated by resource persons from different universities and colleges of the state as well as from other states.
