The Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) in Manipur has issued a call for the commemoration of May 3, marking the one-year anniversary of violence between illegal migrants and the Chin-Kuki-Zo communities. In a press conference today, FOCS emphasized the importance of unity in remembering the tragic events of May 3, 2023.
FOCS, which has now expanded to include 16 organizations, highlights the significance of May 3, 2023, when illegal migrants and Chin-Kuki-Zo groups attacked settlements, displacing thousands of Meiteis. Today, over 50,000 Meiteis are residing in relief camps, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
In response, FOCS is planning commemorations across Manipur, focusing on the destruction of Meitei settlements in Moreh, Churachandpur, and Ekou. The commemorations will be held at various locations, including a state-level convention at the Yangoi Ningthou Community Hall in Bishnupur.
President of FOCS Th. Manihar said, “One day convention of Ima Leipak ta Singnarakpa Numit” will convene to discuss strategies for addressing the ongoing conflict and supporting affected communities. The organization welcomes the participation of various groups in commemorating the event, emphasizing the need for collective action and solidarity.
However, FOCS also urged a unified approach in future commemorations, advocating for a single agenda to maximize impact and cohesion. Despite the urgency of this year’s commemoration, FOCS emphasizes the importance of thoughtful planning and collaboration for future events.
Furthermore, FOCS has now rejected the characterization of May 3 as a “black day,” emphasizing that the conflict persists and demands ongoing attention and action. FOCS further appealed the people of the state to offer ‘Meira’ (torch) the gate on the evening.
