The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal observed World Hypertension Day 2026 today at the General OPD Complex of RIMS Hospital under the theme “Controlling Hypertension Together.”
Director of RIMS, Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, attended the programme along with Medical Superintendent Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Head of the Medicine Department Dr. Chongtham Dhanaraj Singh, and Prof. Y. Govindaraj Singh, Nodal Officer, SAP/Kaya Kalp.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Sharma described hypertension as a “silent killer” that affects vital organs including the brain and kidneys. He highlighted the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring, adherence to medication, exercise, and a balanced low-salt diet. He also noted that hypertension affects nearly 1.4 billion people globally, including around 220 million in India.
A free health screening camp was also organised, offering blood pressure, ECG, and blood sugar tests along with distribution of free medicines to patients. The programme was attended by faculty members, nursing officials, departmental heads, and staff of RIMS.
