All Manipur Meitei Pangal Clubs Organisation (AMMPACO) president Meraimayum Salamat Ali has called for greater recognition of the Pangal community’s historical contributions to building a united Manipur, stressing the need to preserve its legacy for future generations.
He was speaking at a public discourse programme titled “Recalling Our Identity” at the auditorium of Lilong Haoreibi College. The programme was jointly organised by AMMPACO, the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO) and the Lilong Haoreibi College Students’ Union 2025–26 as part of an initiative launched three days earlier at different locations.
Dr Arambam Noni, associate professor at DM University, Dr Md Farijuddin Khan and social activist Pheirojam Nando Luwang attended the programme as resource persons.
Salamat Ali said the Pangal community had been an integral part of Manipur for centuries, contributing significantly to the state’s development and collective identity. He said its identity should not be confined to its distinct traditions, attire, cuisine and lifestyle, but also understood through its role in historical developments and efforts to build a united Manipur.
He observed that differing perceptions and historical narratives among communities had sometimes created divisions and posed challenges to the unity of the state.
Stressing the need to revisit historical accounts, Salamat Ali said the contributions of earlier generations must be documented and passed on to younger generations to ensure that the community’s role in shaping Manipur’s shared identity was neither overlooked nor forgotten.
He called for sustained efforts to promote historical awareness and strengthen unity and harmony among the people of Manipur.
