Tree plantation drive held at Lourong Konjil

A tree plantation programme was conducted today at Lourong Konjil, part of Thongam Mondum Reserved Forest. The event was jointly organised by the Kakching Range Office and Wangoo Lamkhai Beat Office under the supervision of Dr. Leishangthem Jeecelee, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Thoubal.
Speaking at the programme, Huidrom Sundar, Range Officer Kakching, stressed that the Forest Department alone cannot restore the degrading natural ecosystem. He stated that joint efforts from students, local clubs, civil society organisations (CSOs), and women’s groups are crucial to conserving forest resources.
Sundar also informed that during a field visit on July 27, some individuals were found illegally felling Uyung trees in an area known as “Chingyangda Uyung Pareng Houbi” at Lourong Konjil. He said legal action has been initiated under the Indian Forest Act, 1927, and new saplings have been planted in the affected area.
The plantation drive witnessed the participation of Longjam Ramananda, Beat Officer of Wangoo Lamkhai, students and teachers of Green Ground Academy School Wangoo, and Forest Department staff. Meira Paibis, residents and youths from nearby villages surrounding the Chingyangda Uyung Pareng Houbi hill also participated in the plantation drive.
