Manipur Folk Drama Festival begins

4th All Manipur Folk Drama Festival begins today at the auditorium of the Manipur Dramatic Union, Yaiskul. The festival is being organised by the Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU) to preserve and promote the folk plays of the region. The inaugural function of the festival was attended by Works and Transport Minister Dr. Kh. Ratankumar Singh as the Chief Guest. Dr. N Tombi Singh, Retd. Professor Manipur University share the dais with the Minister as Guest of honour while President of the Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU) Ksh. Ibohal Singh presided over it.
A total of six folk plays perform by various renowned theatre organisation of the state will be staged during the six days long festival. The famous play “Haoba Kounu” directed by B. Jugolchandra of the Manipur Dramatic Union was performed on the opening day soon after the inaugural function. Other plays which will be staged are “Meehat” of Imphal Theatre, directed by L. Dolendro, “Laijinglang” of Leimayol Arts Centre, Singjamei, directed by Th. Gyanendra, “Purenba” of Liberty Theatre Kakching, directed by Uttamkumar N, “Nura Sangloulembi” of Lairenkabi Youth Dramatic Union, directed by T. Shamu and “Shingel Uthambal” of North East Theatre Association, Heingang, directed by S Nimai. The plays will be staged one after another each day during the festival.
