As part of the 71st Wildlife Week, a “Nature Trail” programme was organised in Chandel district for students of Classes IX and X from various schools. The initiative aimed to create awareness about wildlife conservation through direct interaction with the forest environment.
Around 100 students participated in the trail, accompanied by teachers and forest officials. The route extended from Japhou Bazar to the forests near Thangkin Khull and Mitong Khull, allowing students to observe a variety of plants, trees, and wildlife. They were educated on the importance of preserving forests and maintaining biodiversity in the region.
The event was led by Head Nungthur Anal and Dr. N. Munal Meitei, DFO/Chandel, who also engaged with the students after the trail. Dr. N. Munal Meitei highlighted that while wildlife and environmental studies are taught in classrooms, real learning occurs through direct observation in nature.
Dr. N. Munal warned that human activities and forest destruction have resulted in the loss of nearly 30% of wildlife habitats, accelerating the decline of biodiversity. He urged students to protect wildlife, avoid harming animals for food or trade, and act as guardians of nature.
