A one-day sensitization programme on Sangai Day was successfully held today at the auditorium of Diligent Public School, Moirang. The event aimed to raise awareness among school students about the endangered Sangai deer (Rucervus eldii eldii) and the importance of preserving its unique habitat—the Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park.
Organised as part of the Sangai First Foundation’s outreach efforts, the programme was attended by 215 students, teachers, and parents. It featured prominent figures from the education and conservation sectors including Dr. K. Bijya, Principal of Diligent Public School; Dr. Kh. Shamungou, Managing Trustee of Sangai First Foundation; and trustees K. Jugeshor, Elangbam Premjit, and Salam Brajakumar.
Delivering the keynote address, K. Jugeshor underscored the need to nurture environmental consciousness among the youth, describing them as future custodians of the state’s ecological heritage. Dr. Kh. Shamungou gave an engaging talk on the historical and ecological significance of the Sangai deer and its wetland habitat. He also distributed educational materials designed to deepen students’ understanding of wildlife conservation.
Adding a youthful voice to the programme, L. Geetanjali, a Class VIII student, delivered a short speech on the topic “Malemda Houjik Oiriba Sangai gi Pheebam” (The Present Condition of the Sangai in the Natural World), which received enthusiastic applause.
Thirteen books authored by Dr. Shamungou on Sangai and environmental topics were donated to the school library to support student learning. A spot quiz competition was also held, with eight winners selected. Prizes for the winners will be awarded during the 2nd Sangai Day observation on December 10, 2025.
The programme concluded with a student conservation pledge, reinforcing their commitment to protecting Manipur’s rich biodiversity.
