SSANL celebrates 30th Foundation Day; Speakers highlight historic role of Manipuri women

The Semgat Sagatpa Apunba Nupi Lup (SSANL), Sagolband Thangjam Leikai, celebrated its 30th Foundation Day today at Thangjam Leirak Lairembi Lampak, with speakers reflecting on the historic and continuing contributions of Manipuri women in shaping the State’s socio-political landscape.
Retired Acting Chairperson of the Manipur Human Rights Commission, Advocate Khaidem Mani, who graced the observance as the chief guest, recalled the long legacy of women’s leadership in Manipur, beginning with the first Nupi Lal of 1904 when women rose against British-imposed forced labour. He noted that Manipuri women again led a historic mass movement during the second Nupi Lal on December 12, 1939, protesting the exploitation resulting from large-scale export of rice.
He further highlighted the crucial role women played during the Emergency in 1975, when heavy crackdowns and widespread restrictions led to new waves of social resistance. This momentum, he said, contributed to the emergence of the Meira Paibi movement around 1980 following the enforcement of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in the State. The landmark June 18, 2001 movement also witnessed decisive participation from Manipuri women, he added.
Stating that the contributions of women remain central to the State’s resilience, Mani said that although men head institutions of governance, it is the women at the grassroots who sustain community life, uphold social order, and respond first during crises. He referred to an incident where an Indian Army officer acknowledged the unparalleled courage and moral strength of Manipuri women.
He also remarked that people are facing increasing hardship under the present “double-engine government” and asserted that Manipuri women must continue to strengthen democratic values to safeguard the State’s future.
The event was presided over by retired Manipur University Professor Polem Nabachandra. Advocate Heigrujam Biramani, SSANL members Shamurailatpam Brindasakhi Devi, Laishram Ibempishak Devi, and Irengbam Thoibi attended as guests of honour.
