Imphal, Oct 23:
Manipur police dismantled a significant extortion network with the arrest of six members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) in the Porompat area of Imphal East district on Tuesday, October 22. The suspects, aged between 20 and 53, were identified as Oinam Abung Meitei, Leimapokpam Hari Meitei, Yaikhom Lukhoi Singh, Oinam Bijen Meitei, Athokpam Inaobi Devi, and Moirangthem Ichan Devi.
During the operation, police seized nearly Rs 3.89 lakh, three vehicles (a car and two motorcycles), multiple mobile phones, identification documents, and other personal items. The group was reportedly involved in an extensive extortion racket targeting private businesses, government offices, and civilians, with alleged connections to illegal arms dealings.
In a related development, a joint operation by central and state forces in Manipur led to the recovery of a substantial cache of weapons and explosives at the Thoiroilok ravine, located on the Churachandpur-Bishnupur interdistrict border. Acting on intelligence inputs, the operation, which lasted around two hours on Tuesday morning, resulted in the seizure of two locally-made Pumpi barrels, two pump-action ammunition rounds, two Gomia power gels (25mmx125g), two electric detonators, three locally-made improvised hand grenades, and a 9mm pistol with a magazine.
While no arrests were made during this operation, an illegally constructed camp was dismantled, marking a significant step in curbing militant activities in the area. The seized items were handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
