TIM urges Thadou registration, says peace requires clarity on ‘Kuki’ identity

Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has urged Thadou people to register through its online portal to affirm their distinct identity, alleging that the state government’s peace outreach has failed to clearly distinguish the Thadou community from organisations representing the Kuki political movement.

In a statement, TIM criticised the government led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh for engaging Kuki, Zomi, Hmar and other representatives while allegedly overlooking the Thadou community and its apex body.

TIM questioned the government’s use of “Kuki” or “Kuki-Zo” as an umbrella term for non-Naga tribes while holding separate engagements with Zomi and Hmar organisations. It maintained that the Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) and Kuki Zo Council (KZC) did not represent the Thadou community, whose interests, it said, were represented by TIM.

The organisation reiterated its opposition to separatist demands, asserting that the Thadou community’s identity and political position should not be conflated with calls for a Union Territory or separate administration.

TIM recalled signing a Joint Covenant of Community Understanding with COCOMI, AMUCO, FOCS and Arambai Tenggol on August 6, 2025, to promote peaceful coexistence between the Thadou and Meitei communities. It urged the public and authorities to recognise and strengthen the understanding.

The organisation also expressed concern over individuals from Thadou, Kuki, Zomi, Hmar and Mizo communities visiting Imphal for transit, medical treatment and other purposes without its knowledge or coordination. It clarified that TIM had no organisational association with such visits and would not be responsible for individuals’ actions.

To reinforce the distinct Thadou identity, TIM said it had introduced a standard operating procedure requiring registration through its website, www.thadou.com.

The organisation reiterated its commitment to dialogue and peace, insisting that the Thadou community should be represented through TIM rather than what it described as proxies or self-appointed representatives.
