Conservation awareness programme for students held

Sangai First Foundation (SfF), Manipur, organised a one-day sensitisation programme on Sangai conservation at The Little Birds’ School, Moirang, today, aiming to promote environmental awareness among students and highlight the threats facing Manipur’s state animal and its habitat.

Addressing the programme, SfF president Dr. Khangembam Shamungou highlighted the history of Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world’s only floating national park, and the ecological significance of the Sangai (Rucervus eldii eldii). He raised concerns over the declining Sangai population, the ecological impact of the Ithai Barrage on Loktak Lake and the degradation of floating phumdis that sustain the endangered deer.

SfF vice-president Kumam Jugeshor stressed the need for public awareness and community participation in protecting the Sangai and its fragile ecosystem. He also highlighted the folklore and cultural heritage associated with the deer and Keibul Lamjao National Park.
