The Patriotic Writers Forum (PAWF), Manipur, and the Manipuri Women Literary & Cultural Organization (MWLCO) will jointly observe Nupi Lal Day on December 12 at the Nupi Lal Memorial Statue in Govindapur, Hojai.
Speaking to media while paying tribute at the statue, PAWF Manipur Secretary Rakesh Naorem said the observance is aimed at commemorating the courage and sacrifices of Manipuri women during the historic Nupi Lal movements of 1904 and 1939. He added that the event will help preserve the history of these movements and inspire younger generations of the Meetei diaspora to uphold nationalism and pride in their heritage.
The function was attended by MWLCO Hojai President Huirongbam Kunjabati, PAWF Manipur President Naoroibam Khamba Luwang, Founder Secretary O.C. Meira, Secretary Rakesh Naorem, and several other office bearers and dignitaries from both organizations.
Huirongbam Kunjabati said, “The community will come together at the Nupi Lal Memorial Statue to honour the bravery of Manipuri women. Support from individuals across Delhi, Wakhal, and Pangal communities has been invaluable. We invite everyone to participate and make the programme a success.”
O.C. Meira highlighted that the statue helps preserve collective memory and strengthens ties among Meeteis living outside Manipur, noting that such memorials, like those of Paona Brajabashi, Hijam Irawat, Bir Tikendrajit, and Thangal General, inspire pride and moral strength in the diaspora.
Local elders also expressed gratitude to 84-year-old Karam Ningol Seram Ongbi Jayenti, wife of late Seram Kamini, who donated the land for the memorial. She will be specially honoured during the Nupi Lal Day observance.
