Imphal, Oct 24:
The Centre for Study of Society and Secularism (CSSS) has called for immediate disarmament and sustained dialogue as essential steps to resolving the ongoing conflict in Manipur. In a press statement, CSSS Director Irfan Engineer highlighted the importance of addressing deep-rooted grievances between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have fueled violence and unrest in the region.
The CSSS team, which recently visited relief camps in Imphal, Churachandpur, and Bishnupur, met with various stakeholders from both communities. Their findings underscored the devastating impact of the conflict, including widespread displacement and loss of life. Engineer stressed that while efforts have been made to restore order, the central government must do more to dismantle armed groups and demilitarize the region to create a safe environment for reconciliation.
The statement emphasized the need for swift justice for victims of violence, and urged that the shared homeland of Manipur should be respected for all its residents, regardless of ethnic background. Engineer also pointed out that reconciliation can only be achieved if both communities’ cultural identities and claims are acknowledged and respected.
The CSSS expressed hope that the Meitei and Kuki communities, who have suffered the most from the conflict, can work toward rebuilding trust and fostering peace in the region.
