Imphal, Sept 8:
The Manipur People’s Democratic Front (MPDF) has accused both the Union and State governments of failing to handle the escalating violence in the state. MPDF leaders emphasized that the Constitution of India, which upholds law and order, is being undermined by the unchecked actions of Kuki militants.
The organization speaking to the press stated that while Manipur is governed by the laws of the Indian Constitution, the violence orchestrated by Kuki terrorists has been allowed to continue with impunity, undermining the state’s sovereignty and security. MPDF demanded urgent action from both the state and central authorities to address the deteriorating law and order situation.
MPDF leaders condemned the use of missiles, bombs, and drone strikes by Kuki militants, which have led to civilian casualties and targeted security personnel. They questioned why the central government has not taken stronger action.
Citing the Constitution of India’s Seventh Schedule, MPDF highlighted that the maintenance of law and order falls under the purview of the State, but the Union Government is equally responsible, particularly under Article 355, which mandates the protection of states from internal disturbances. MPDF urged the government to directly intervene, as the violence has only worsened since May 2023, with attacks leaving hundreds dead and thousands displaced.
