An awareness programme on cocoon rearing under the Mera Resham Mera Abhiman initiative was held today at the relief camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Kwakta, Bishnupur District. The programme was organized under the guidance of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, with active support from the Central Silk Board-Regional Sericultural Research Station, Mantripukhri, and the District Sericulture Office, Bishnupur.
Dr. S. Subharani Devi, Scientist-D and Head, Ng. Binodini, Assistant Director of the Sericulture Training Institute, Kwakta, K. Tahenleima Chanu, District Sericulture Officer, and Ng. Ahung Singh, Social Activist and IDP Convenor, presided over the event.
Dr. Subharani Devi, speaking on the theme “My Silk, My Pride,” emphasized the support provided by the Central Silk Board and State Sericulture Department to district-level initiatives and training for Muga silk rearers. K. Tahenleima Chanu highlighted the involvement of both men and women in sericulture and its potential to provide economic support to Manipuri families.
Demonstrations on cocoon management, dyeing, and weaving were conducted by Ak. Rocket Singh, H. Shanti, and Kh. Iberri. Over 100 IDPs participated, gaining technical skills and knowledge aimed at promoting self-employment and economic upliftment through sericulture.
