Imphal, Oct 20:
The Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the suspicious deaths of Basanti and her daughter Lanchenbi, 28 days after the tragic incident. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) and local residents have echoed this demand, expressing dissatisfaction with the current investigation’s lack of progress.
During a fact-finding visit, residents of Haoreibi voiced concerns over the police’s handling of the case, alleging negligence in the investigation process. The YFPHR supported these concerns, stating that the community feels the authorities have failed to take sufficient action to uncover the truth behind the deaths.
The forum also raised concerns about the involvement of local law enforcement, specifically questioning the role of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and alleged links to the former Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the area. However, YFPHR clarified that these concerns were based on field reports and grievances shared by local residents, stressing that they had no personal grievances against any individual. The group retracted any remarks that might have implied a direct connection between the SDPO and the prime suspects, stating they only wished to highlight the dissatisfaction over the handling of the case.
YFPHR reaffirmed its appeal to the Director General of Police, the Manipur State Commission for Women, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and the Governor of Manipur to urgently form an SIT to thoroughly investigate the deaths and ensure justice for Basanti and her daughter.
