The World Meetei Council (WMC) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing concern over the prolonged unrest in Manipur and seeking immediate intervention to restore normalcy.
In the memorandum, WMC Chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam stated that nearly three years into the crisis, the situation remains “deeply troubling” despite the deployment of over 60,000 military and paramilitary personnel in the state.
The council flagged the continued blockade of a nearly 30-kilometre stretch of National Highway-2, part of the Asian Highway-1, allegedly by Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups of Kuki-Zo outfits, which it said has severely impacted civilian movement and supply lines.
While acknowledging the Centre’s efforts to address insurgency in the Northeast, particularly involving Meetei groups, WMC alleged that the current approach has resulted in hardship for civilians and created a perception that SoO groups are enjoying operational freedom.
The memorandum further noted that calls by the Centre to restore normalcy appear inconsistent when such armed groups remain beyond the effective control of the state, contributing to public frustration and insecurity.
Appealing for urgent intervention, WMC urged the Prime Minister to ensure free movement along national highways, restore peace, and deliver a just and lasting resolution to the crisis, while stressing that the people of Manipur should be treated on par with citizens in other parts of the country.
