The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) has raised concern over the alleged inaction of the Government of India in detecting and deporting illegal migrants in Manipur despite reports of large-scale infiltration.
In a press statement, the union questioned whether migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar entering the state are being overlooked for electoral considerations or due to geopolitical interests. It cautioned that such inaction could have serious demographic and security implications.
MMTU noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier acknowledged the efforts of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in raising concerns over illegal migration and drug-related issues in northeastern states. It also cited reports that over 42,000 migrants entering from Myanmar had undergone biometric registration, as stated by the Assam Rifles.
Referring to remarks by R. N. Ravi, the union said unchecked migration in the Northeast could pose long-term national challenges. It maintained that Manipur remains one of the worst-affected states, yet no significant deportation drive has been undertaken.
The union recalled earlier agitations led by student bodies, including agreements reached in 1980 and 1994, but alleged that implementation has remained ineffective. It also pointed to a directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on May 19 for identification and deportation of illegal migrants across states and Union Territories, noting that enforcement in Manipur has been limited compared to states like Assam and Mizoram.
Highlighting broader concerns, MMTU referred to instances in various parts of the country where foreign nationals were found possessing Aadhaar and other identity documents, raising questions over systemic loopholes. It alleged that such migrants are being included in electoral rolls and accessing government welfare schemes.
The statement further noted that migration pressures from Bangladesh and ongoing conflict in Myanmar have contributed to the influx into Manipur. It claimed that some groups have sought inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list, complicating the issue further.
Describing the situation as both a national and international concern, MMTU urged the Centre to take immediate and effective measures to detect and deport illegal migrants, warning that continued inaction could have far-reaching consequences for the region and the country.
