Imphal, Sept 8:
The World Meitei Council (WMC) has submitted a memorandum to Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, urging him to regulate air ticket prices amidst the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
According to the memorandum, the Imphal Valley is geographically enclosed by two key routes—National Highway No. 2 through Kangpokpi district, which connects to Nagaland, and National Highway No. 37 through Tamenglong district, connecting to Assam.
However, due to the ongoing tensions, these highways have become restricted and unsafe for the Meetei community, forcing residents to rely heavily on air travel via Imphal Airport, the region’s only airport.
The memorandum noted that air ticket prices from Imphal to nearby cities such as Dimapur, Guwahati, and Silchar have significantly increased over the past year, adding to the burden of the already affected population. With limited alternatives, residents are left with no option but to face high travel costs or risk their safety on the unsafe highways.
In light of these challenges, the WMC requested the Civil Aviation Ministry to consider measures to regulate and reduce air ticket prices for flights connecting Imphal with Dimapur, Guwahati, and Silchar. The suggestions include capping ticket prices, offering subsidies, or increasing the frequency of flights. The WMC emphasized that timely intervention would bring much-needed relief to the people of Manipur during this critical period.
