The observance of “Wildlife Week” was held in conjunction with “Sewa Parv” today at Lambung Community Hall, Chandel. The programme began with the traditional lighting of the lamp and was attended by Md. Firoj Khan, ADC/Chandel, Dr. N. Munal Meitei, DFO/Chandel, David Boyes, Vice President of Naga Hoho, Vishal Rai, Assistant Commandant of 21 Assam Rifles, and village chief Nohah Langhu of Lambung Khul.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. N. Munal Meitei highlighted that the Sewa Parv, observed from September 17 to October 2 as part of the Nation First @ 75 Campaign, coincides this year with the 71st Wildlife Week, which has been observed since 1955 to promote the protection of wildlife and environment. He stressed that the initiative aims to inspire collective action towards a sustainable future as India moves towards its centenary of independence in 2047.
As part of the Sewa Parv activities in Chandel, plantation of 2,000 tree saplings was carried out across eight villages, while awareness programmes were organised involving school students, ASHA workers, and Self Help Group members. A rally was also conducted to spread awareness on wildlife conservation. Dr. Munal noted that as an Aspirational District, Chandel has shown strong community participation in such initiatives, and urged the public to protect forests and wildlife, warning that extinction of species would disturb ecological balance and human survival.
Md. Firoj Khan, ADC/Chandel, remarked that wildlife must be preserved for future generations and that the week-long observance serves as a reminder for society to respect nature. He added that protecting wildlife would also ensure a sustainable and developed Manipur.
David Boyes, Vice-President of Naga Hoho, stated that wildlife conservation is a collective responsibility, especially for hill communities who coexist closely with nature. He urged village authorities to discourage hunting and cutting of trees and instead guide villagers in adopting conservation practices.
Vishal Rai, Assistant Commandant of 21 Assam Rifles, reiterated the commitment of Assam Rifles towards wildlife and environmental conservation, assuring support to the Forest Department and local communities in safeguarding biodiversity.
Following the formal programme, an awareness drive was held with active participation from local youth clubs and organisations. Plantation of saplings and pledges to protect wildlife marked the conclusion of the observance.
