The Working Committee of the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has demanded a “fair and impartial” investigation into the case registered against Naga educator, musician and social advocate Daisingam Malangmei alias Ambrose O. Kamei alias Ambrose Freebird, warning that any perceived misuse of legal authority could compel the organisation to launch a democratic movement.
In a strongly worded statement, the TNL Working Committee extended its “unflinching solidarity” with Ambrose, who has been booked in FIR No. 15(7)2026CCPS at the Cyber Crime Police Station, Manipur, over alleged Facebook postings.
The organisation maintained that his social-media advocacy concerning the rights, identity and dignity of the Naga community should not be treated as a criminal act merely because it expresses concerns about the suffering of his community amid the continuing crisis in Manipur.
The FIR invokes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, including Sections 196(1)(a), 197(c), 353(1)(b)(c) and 152. The TNL, however, questioned whether the social-media posts in question actually disclose any legally cognisable offence warranting such action.
Invoking Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech and expression subject to constitutionally permitted restrictions, the TNL accused the law-enforcement machinery of “undue flexing of power” without adequately examining the substance and context of the alleged posts.
The Working Committee urged the authorities to exercise restraint, ensure due process and conduct the investigation without prejudice, while respecting constitutional and universal principles concerning freedom of expression.
It warned that failure to respond to the concerns and collective sentiment of the people would leave the TNL with “no option” but to regard the investigation as biased and unfair.
The organisation said it would then consider pursuing the matter through democratic means, signalling the possibility of organised mobilisation if its demand for an impartial investigation is not addressed.
