In a significant development, the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West has issued a 15-day remand and formally authorized the arrest of the 12 women at the center of the viral video case that has sparked widespread outrage in Manipur. The judicial proceedings pertaining to this case were conducted virtually today.
In response to the recent viral video circulating on various social media platforms, wherein a woman was allegedly slapped by members of Huyen Mamom, the Manipur Police have taken decisive action by registering an FIR. The sections invoked, including 319, 321, and 323 (causing hurt), 340 (wrongful confinement), 350 (criminal force), 351 (assault), 355 (assault or criminal force with the intent to dishonour), 503 (criminal intimidation), 499 (defamation), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, 1860, and 66 E of the IT Act, indicate a comprehensive legal approach aimed at addressing both physical and psychological dimensions of the incident.
The complainant, a woman at the center of the recent controversy, has clarified the context of her alleged reference to the women’s group “Huyen Mamom” as “Lawai Nupi,” a term that translates to “Village Women,” or “Women from far flung locations.” In a detailed complaint letter, the woman asserted that this statement was made entirely unintentionally during a private conversation. She contended that her remark was a reaction to derogatory statements made by a certain Bonny Haobam.
With Manipur grappling with a protracted period of violence extending over seven months, a disturbing trend has emerged through numerous viral videos. These videos depict various groups taking the law into their own hands, engaging in acts of violence under the guise of moral policing. In response to this alarming situation, a chorus of concern has risen from multiple political parties, and civilians have voiced their discontent with these organizations for their unwarranted acts of moral policing.
These incidents, captured and disseminated widely through social media platforms, underscore a breakdown in the rule of law and an erosion of social order. The acts of violence committed in the name of moral policing not only jeopardize individual freedoms but also sow seeds of fear and uncertainty within the community.
In the face of this growing menace, political parties have stepped forward to voice their apprehensions, highlighting the urgent need for the government to intervene and take appropriate actions. The public, too, has expressed its discontent, emphasizing the importance of restoring law and order, safeguarding individual liberties, and holding those responsible for acts of moral policing accountable.
