Residents of Sangaiyumpham Nungphou Bazar under Thoubal Zila Parishad have raised concern over the increasing practice of butchering and selling of cooked and raw beef meat at the foot of the bridge by a few individuals as there is complete lack of hygienic and safety procedures. Locals have raised complaints against the practice of butchering the animals in broad daylight in the open in the presence of the public who are using the approaching road to the bridge, as well scattering the remains of the animals in and around the river which has raised foul smell around the vicinity. Moreover, it has been observed that the meats sold along the foot of the bridge are covered with flies and other insects with foul smell filling the air. While applauding the effort of the individuals who are making an honest living, residents from nearby area are expressing the desire for the authorities to look into the matter and make necessary arrangements so that the livelihood of the butchers and meat vendors are not affected while maintaining the eco-system of the locality at the same time.
