With just a day to go for the long-awaited homecoming of the revered Naga leader and Ato Kilonser of the NSCN/GPRN, Thuingaleng Muivah, preparations in Ukhrul town and his native village Somdal have reached their final stages. The entire Tangkhul community is abuzz with excitement as they prepare to welcome one of the most respected figures in Naga history back to his homeland after decades of dedicated service to the Naga cause.
Speaking to media persons, Eno. Jollyson RS, Vice President of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and Co-convener of the Organising Committee, confirmed that all arrangements for the grand reception are nearly complete. “Since day one, the preparation has been progressing smoothly, and we are now almost done. The spirit and unity among the people have been overwhelming,” he said.
According to Jollyson, the organising committee—comprising various Tangkhul civil society organisations (CSOs)—has received unprecedented moral, physical, and financial support from individuals, communities, and institutions across the region. “This shows the deep love and respect our people hold for Ato Kilonser Th. Muivah. Everyone is contributing in their own way to make this historic occasion a memorable one,” he added.
To ensure smooth coordination and security, the committee has issued a set of guidelines for the event. A special media briefing will be held at 8:00 a.m. on October 22 at the TNL Multi-Purpose Building, where official press passes will be distributed after a detailed orientation. Jolyson cautioned that any media personnel failing to attend the briefing will not be allowed entry into the designated media gallery during the event.
In view of security and public safety, the committee has also banned the private use of drones in and around Ukhrul town during the homecoming ceremony. Only officially approved drones will be permitted for aerial documentation. “This will be strictly monitored throughout the event,” he affirmed.
The homecoming ceremony is expected to draw massive participation from all sections of society — elders, youth, women’s groups, students, and well-wishers from across the Naga homeland. The atmosphere in Ukhrul has been charged with anticipation as banners, flags, and welcome arches adorn the streets, symbolizing unity, pride, and reverence.
Jollyson further extended a heartfelt appeal to the public: “On behalf of the Tangkhul Naga Long and the organising committee, I sincerely invite everyone to come and be a part of this historic and momentous occasion. Let us celebrate the return of our beloved leader, who has devoted his life to the Naga people’s aspiration for peace, dignity, and self-determination.”
The grand event, scheduled for October 22, will include a public congregation at Ukhrul headquarters followed by a ceremonial welcome at Somdal village — the birthplace of Ato Kilonser Th. Muivah. The occasion marks not only a homecoming of a leader but also a homecoming of history, rekindling the collective spirit and unity of the Naga people.
As the clock ticks closer to the big day, Ukhrul stands ready — its hearts open, its streets prepared, and its people united — to receive their most revered son with honor and pride.
