Imphal, Oct 2:
In the Tarpon ceremony, an occasion where offerings are made to ancestors at Kekrupat, United Committee Manipur (UCM) resounded to the remarks made by the Army Chief on the Manipur conflict. YK Dhiren, President of UCM, addressed the gathering, raising concerns about the security situation in Manipur saying the ongoing drone bombings and missile attacks in the state, the infiltration of Kuki militants, have escalated the conflict.
These attacks have caused alarm, but despite the severity of the situation, the Army Chief has denied allegations of drone bombings and foreign militant infiltration, leading to confusion and frustration among the public. In a recent high-level meeting that involved the Director General of Police (DGP), the state security advisor, and senior Indian Army officials, it was acknowledged that drone bombings have indeed taken place. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been assigned to investigate the matter further.
However, the Army Chief’s denial has raised questions about the lack of coordination and clarity between security agencies, creating significant uncertainty.
The President of UCM also expressed grave concern over the ongoing abduction of two youths, who continue to be held hostage by militants. There are reports suggesting that the militants are seeking an exchange, further complicating the situation. He criticized the Indian government’s inaction, urging for immediate efforts to rescue the youths before the situation worsens.
Another contentious issue raised during the speech was the Army Chief’s statement suggesting that, on humanitarian grounds, shelter should be provided to illegal immigrants. Though appreciative of the humanitarian cause, UCM, however, opposes this stance, asserting that national and international laws should be applied to address the situation and Army Chief’s position is unclear as there is no refugee law in India.
YK. Dhiren concluded that the need for wide consultation among the public to find a long-term solution to the ongoing crisis. He stressed that addressing these issues with transparency and inclusivity would be critical to restoring peace and stability in Manipur.
