A large number of Meira Paibis staged a torch rally at Nongpok Sekmai in Thoubal district on Tuesday night, condemning the recent incident at Tronglaobi Awang Leikai in Bishnupur district in which two children lost their lives and their mother sustained serious injuries.
Participants from several areas, including Nongpok Sekmai, Ingourok, Hijam Khunou, Shikhong, Ukhongsang, and Shikhong Keithel, gathered at NESA Lampak around 8 pm. The rally commenced from the venue and proceeded through the locality, with demonstrators expressing grief and outrage over the incident.
Speaking on the occasion, a Meira Paibi representative described the incident as deeply distressing, particularly for mothers, and called for stringent action against those responsible. She urged both the State and Central governments to ensure that the perpetrators are identified and punished, and that ongoing security operations are strengthened to prevent further such incidents.
The speaker also raised concerns over a series of past incidents, including violence, abductions, and alleged involvement in illegal activities such as drug trafficking and poppy cultivation. She stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to address the situation and restore normalcy.
Appealing for urgent intervention, she called upon the State leadership to convene discussions with elected representatives and take up the matter with the Central government. She also demanded measures such as the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and other steps aimed at ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region.
During the rally, participants raised slogans demanding justice for the victims, arrest of those involved in the Tronglaobi incident, and early implementation of NRC.
