Tobacco-Free Youth campaign launched at JNV Ramva: “Together Manipur Says No to Tobacco”

Ukhrul, Nov 28:

The Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign, themed “Together Manipur Says No to Tobacco,” was launched at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Ramva, on Tuesday, marking a significant step in promoting tobacco-free living. The campaign, organized by the NCD Cell, District Health Society, Ukhrul, and supported by the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), aims to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and reduce its prevalence, particularly among youth.
The event began with a free medical health camp offering check-ups for students and staff. Dr. Kapangring A. Shimray, Chief Medical Officer of Ukhrul District Hospital, addressed the gathering, using a slideshow to highlight the devastating effects of tobacco use. He explained how tobacco contains harmful chemicals such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, and carcinogens, which contribute to serious health conditions like lung cancer, heart disease, and stroke. He also pointed out the specific risks posed to women during pregnancy, such as low birth weight and developmental issues in babies, as well as the effects of tobacco on male fertility, including erectile dysfunction. Dr. Shimray urged the audience to make responsible choices, stating, “Keep the key of life in your hands, don’t give it to tobacco. Tobacco is killing us—don’t let it kill you!”
After the presentation, all attendees, including students, teachers, and staff, took a pledge to support the campaign and adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle. The pledge, led by the school principal, called for personal responsibility and community action to prevent tobacco use and encourage a healthy environment within the school.
Dr. Lucy Shaiza, Senior Medical Officer at Ukhrul District Hospital, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of maintaining overall health for a thriving community. She encouraged students to adopt healthy habits, such as consuming seasonal fruits, drinking plenty of water, and ensuring adequate sleep to strengthen their immune systems.
The event featured an interactive quiz session conducted by Eno Ramayo Chiphang, District Project Manager, which engaged the audience and rewarded winners with prizes. Public awareness efforts to curb tobacco use also include the distribution of educational materials and media campaigns, as well as enforcing legal measures to prevent tobacco sales near schools and to minors.
The Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign is part of a broader initiative to reduce tobacco use in India, aligning with the NTCP’s goals of promoting healthier, tobacco-free lives. The event at JNV Ramva signifies an important step toward creating a tobacco-free generation in Manipur, with the message “Kiss Tobacco Goodbye, Say Hello to Life!” resonating strongly with participants.
