A significant step towards reducing tobacco use among the youth was taken today with the virtual inauguration of a Tobacco Cessation Centre by Jagat Prakash Nadda, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, as part of the Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 2.0. The Centre, established under the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) at the Department of Psychiatry, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, aims to help individuals overcome tobacco dependence.
The newly inaugurated Centre at RIMS, Imphal, will provide a range of services, including personalized counselling, nicotine replacement therapies, and mental health support, to assist individuals in quitting tobacco. It marks a key milestone in India’s ongoing efforts to create a tobacco-free nation. The NTCP has been pivotal in reducing tobacco use across the country by implementing public health policies, regulating the sale of tobacco products, and setting up cessation centres.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal, Prof. N. Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, Dr. S. Gojendra Singh, Associate Professor and Head of the Psychiatry Department, and Dr. Sameeta Ng., Assistant Professor and Head of the Clinical Psychology Department. Faculties, staff, and students of RIMS also participated, showing strong support for the initiative.
