Imphal, Sept 3:
Taragi Cheisu (TC) has strongly condemned the recent escalation of violence in Manipur, particularly the drone attacks on Koutruk and other foothill villages in Imphal West on September 1, 2024. The attacks, which resulted in the deaths of two civilians, including a young mother, and left several others injured, have sparked outrage and concern across the region. TC extended its condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with those injured.
In a statement, TC criticized the Kuki-Chin armed groups for their continued aggression, accusing them of regrouping and exploiting the reduced presence of state forces in interior areas. The organization claimed that these groups are deliberately targeting vulnerable Meitei villages to perpetuate conflict and disrupt any attempts at reconciliation among civilians in the region.
TC expressed alarm over the use of sophisticated weaponry, including drones, by the Kuki-Chin militants. The group questioned the effectiveness of central security forces, accusing them of failing to monitor and prevent such attacks despite their significant presence in the state. TC also criticized the central forces for allegedly preventing state police from entering areas where the attacks originated, calling this behavior unacceptable.
The organization called on those negotiating with the Kuki-Chin militants under the Suspension of Operation agreement to hold them accountable for their actions, emphasizing that such violent acts will not further their goals. TC reiterated the importance of Manipur’s historical and legal integrity, rejecting any attempts to disintegrate the state.
TC urged the public and civil society to remain vigilant against provocations and to uphold justice and humanitarian values in the face of ongoing violence. The organization condemned the drone attacks as inhumane and called for those responsible to be brought to justice to prevent further destabilization of Manipur.
