Ukhrul, April 11:
The Tangkhul Naga community has rejected as “baseless and fabricated” allegations linking its volunteers to a reported firing incident at Mongkot Chepu, asserting that none of its members discharged any weapon.
In a statement issued by the Information and Media Cell of Khanuithot-Khon, the community said the claims were unfounded and appeared aimed at misleading authorities and escalating tensions amid the fragile security situation.
The statement said a large public meeting was held at Mongkot Chepu from 2 pm to 5 pm on the day of the alleged incident, with volunteers instructed to maintain strict discipline. It maintained that all volunteers were present at the gathering during the time the firing was reported.
Describing the incident as a possible “staged provocation,” the community alleged that such acts were intended to disrupt peaceful assemblies and create friction between local volunteers and security forces. It further claimed that similar incidents have occurred since the outbreak of ethnic tensions in 2023, contributing to mistrust among communities.
Warning against the spread of misinformation, the statement said such allegations could endanger civilians and undermine efforts to restore peace in the region.
Reaffirming its commitment to non-violence, the community urged the Government of Manipur and central authorities to conduct a fair and impartial investigation to identify those responsible for the incident.
It also appealed to the public and stakeholders to exercise restraint and avoid circulating unverified information that could further aggravate the situation.
