Protests continued across Imphal today as civil society groups, Meira Paibi organisations, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) demanded justice for victims of the April 7 attack in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, and subsequent violence.
A sit-in protest was staged at Singjamei by women of Kshetri Leikai along with IDPs from Akampat Relief Camp. The demonstration, organised by the SEYO Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai, saw participants strongly condemning the killing of two children in the Tronglaobi incident and the reported deaths of three civilians in alleged firing by personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
Protesters also expressed outrage over the recent rape and murder of a minor IDP girl, terming it a brutal act, and called for immediate justice and stringent action against those responsible. Demonstrators criticised the government for failing to ensure public safety and restore normalcy, stating that the ongoing crisis since May 2023 continues to severely impact civilian life.
In a separate demonstration, the All Kongba Road United Clubs’ Organisation (AKRUCO) area Meira Paibis staged a sit-in protest in Imphal East, condemning the Tronglaobi attack and the subsequent firing incident. Holding placards and raising slogans, they demanded accountability and urged authorities to take decisive steps to prevent recurrence of such violence.
Adding to the wave of protests, a torch rally was held yesterday evening at Nungbrang in Imphal East district, where a large number of women and youths participated. The rally was organised by Nungbrang Apunba Meira Paibi, along with local clubs and committees.
During the rally, speakers voiced strong resentment over the killing of two minors and the injury of their mother in the Tronglaobi incident. Representatives of the Meira Paibi groups also raised concerns over the role of central forces, alleging excessive use of force in dealing with civilians, and called for accountability in incidents involving security personnel.
Across all protest sites, demonstrators raised slogans demanding justice for the victims, stronger security measures, and accountability from authorities, reflecting growing public anger over the recent spate of violence.
