BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, from Thanlon Assembly Constituency of Pherzwal district, Manipur breathe his last at Medanta Medicity Hospital in Gurugram today. He was 63 years old. Late MLA Vungzagin Valte a deadly mob attack in an attack by protesters in Imphal during the initial days of the of Meitei-Kuki ethnic clashes in May 2023. Valte sustained serious injury after a mob attacked at RIMS road Imphal on May 4, 2023 while returning after attending a meeting with former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. After treating him at RIMS under critical condition he was shifted Delhi for further treatment at Delhi in June by an air ambulance and Admitted at Apollo Hospital. After nearly two years of treatment in Delhi, Valte returned home to Churachandpur, accompanied by his wife on 18 April 2025. However on February 7, 2026 he was again admitted to the ICU at Churachandpur Medical College Hospital after worsening his condition. In view of the seriousness of his condition, he was then airlifted on February 8 from Imphal to Medanta – The Medicity in Gurugram for advanced treatment. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had closely monitored Valte’s health condition through the night and arranged for an advanced life-support ambulance along with a team of doctors from Imphal to be dispatched to Churachandpur around midnight to facilitate his transfer.
Vungzagin Valte was first elected to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly in 2012in INC ticket from Thanlon Assembly constituency. He was re-elected to the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly on a BJP ticket in 2017 and served as a Minister for TA & GAD and Transport, again he was elected in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Shock over the news of the demise of Vungzagin Valte, Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has cancelled his proposed visit to New Delhi to meet the Union Home Minister and other central leaders, source said. The CM was scheduled to leave Imphal tomorrow to hold consultations with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and senior BJP leaders on the pending expansion of his ministry and allocation of portfolios, according to sources.
His two deputies and two cabinet ministers were also reportedly planning to join him in the meeting. However, the sources added that CM Khemchand deferred his visit till February 22.Khemchand was sworn in on February 4 after nearly a year of President’s Rule in the state. However, portfolios have not yet been assigned to the two deputy chief ministers and two ministers who took oath alongside him
Expressing deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Vungzagin Valte, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand in his Facebook post, stated that Pu Valte was a dedicated public representative and a compassionate leader who devoted his life to the service of the people. He noted that the late MLA had consistently worked for the welfare, progress and overall development of Manipur, striving to strengthen infrastructure, uplift communities and bring positive change to the lives of many.
Describing his passing as an immense loss, the Chief Minister stated that the state had lost a sincere leader and a humble individual who stood firmly for the welfare of his constituents. He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, supporters and well-wishers, and prayed for strength and comfort for them in this difficult time.
On the other hand, deputy chief minister Nemcha Kipgen has expressed her deep sorrow while mourning the demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte.
“He was a dedicated leader who worked tirelessly for the welfare and progress of his people. His humility, integrity, and commitment to public service have left a lasting impact,” the deputy chief minister wrote on her social media platforms. “My sincere condolences to his family and supporters. May God grant them strength and comfort during this time of grief. Rest in Peace Pu,” she added.
Thokchom Satyabrata, Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, has condoled the demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.
In a condolence message, the Speaker expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Vungzagin Valte, MLA of 56–Thanlon Assembly Constituency, whose noble journey of service was cut short on February 20, 2026. He described the late leader’s life as a guiding light of humility, dedication, and unwavering service to the people.
The Speaker also shared the pain and grief of the bereaved family and prayed that they find strength and solace during this difficult time. He further expressed hope that the memory of the departed leader would continue to inspire compassion, unity, and peace for generations to come.
Congress CLP leader Keisham Meghachandra Singh, also condole the untimely demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte. “His passing is not only a great loss to his family and loved ones, but also to the people of Thanlon and the entire state of Manipur”, Meghachandra said.
He added that MLA Vungzagin Valte dedicated his life to public service and stood committed to the welfare of his constituents. At this moment of profound grief, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.
Former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh also share his pain and sorrow to the demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte
“I am deeply saddened by the demise of Thanlon MLA Pu Vungzagin Valte. He fought bravely for his life with courage and resilience, holding on with hope even in the most difficult times. His strength in adversity will always be remembered with respect. For me, his passing is not just a public loss but a deeply personal and painful moment, especially when our state has already endured so much. May his departure become a turning point for all of us. Let us give up violence and division, and choose peace, dialogue and unity. The greatest tribute we can offer him is to work towards a harmonious Manipur. May his soul rest in eternal peace”, He wrote on ‘X’.
Inner Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam wrote on “X” “I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of MLA VungzaginValte. His demise is indeed an irreparable loss for Manipur. From all that I have heard about him from those who have known him, he was a gentle soul and committed public figure. His contribution to community life and our beloved state as an elected member shall be cherished for years to come.”
