Agriculture Department, Government of Manipur, and United Farmer Club Langathel (UFCL), Thoubal, jointly organised a Farmers’ Training-cum-Seed Distribution Programme at Langathel Leikom Bazar Community Hall today.
Speaking as chief guest, Joychandra Konthoujam, Chairman of the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipur War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak Manipur, called for collective efforts to strengthen agriculture and make Manipur more self-reliant in food production.
Konthoujam urged people to protect agricultural land and promote cultivation of locally suitable crops, saying greater dependence on locally produced food would help reduce reliance on supplies from outside the State. He called for a renewed agricultural culture based on increased production, community participation and better use of available resources.
He stressed the need to promote agriculture and horticulture in both valley and hill areas by adopting modern technologies and improved farming practices. Increased cultivation, he said, could boost production, strengthen the rural economy and improve the livelihood of farmers while also contributing to environmental protection.
Konthoujam also urged communities to maintain peace and work collectively for the development of the State. He said local agricultural production becomes particularly important when disruptions on major highways affect the movement of essential commodities.
District Agriculture Officer R.K. Umakanta Singh presided over the programme, attended by Agriculture Officer W. Subhash Singh, Langathel Gram Panchayat Chairperson Tomba Singh and District Officer of Agriculture Linthoi Wathum.
