Imphal, Nov 14:
Students across Manipur held statewide protests on Children’s Day, rebranded as “Black Children’s Day,” to demand the safe release of six individuals allegedly abducted by Kuki militants, including a 10-month-old infant. The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Students’ Front spearheaded the protests, condemning the state government for its failure to secure the release of the hostages, which include three women and three minors reportedly taken by Chin-Kuki “narco-terrorists” in Jiribam.
In a statement, COCOMI Students’ Front Media Coordinator S. Bidyananda criticized the government’s inaction, calling it a failure to protect civilians amid continued threats and attacks by militant groups. Students gathered from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., wearing black badges in silent protest and solidarity with the captives. Demonstrations were seen throughout the valley, where students voiced discontent over the government’s handling of security and urged swift action for the hostages’ safe return.
The abduction occurred on November 11 in the Borobekra sub-division following a clash between Kuki militants and CRPF personnel. Despite search efforts, the whereabouts of the captives remain unknown, heightening concerns for their safety. A student protestor expressed frustration, stating, “Celebrating Children’s Day feels meaningless amid such a tragedy. The government must prioritize the safe return of these innocent children and women.”
Protesters carried placards bearing messages such as, “No Children’s Day until the captured children are released,” “Black Children’s Day,” and “Mr. CM, we demand the release of the victims as a Children’s Day gift.” The crowd also chanted slogans, demanding immediate action from the government, reflecting widespread public anguish over the incident and calling for accountability in safeguarding citizens’ lives and rights.
