State Government representative, L. Lakher, IAS, Principal Secretary (Veterinary & AH Services and Industries) will be attending the Kolkata Dialogue on Look East to Act East scheduled to be held on January 9, at Hotel Oberoi Grand, Kolkata. The dialogue is organized to boost the existing ties between India and the South East Asian countries through the country’s ‘Look East’ policy which has been recently upgraded to “Act East” policy.
The Look East Policy has been pursued through constructive engagement with various regional groupings/orgaisations such as SEAN, East Asia Summit, Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BISTEC) and Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC). India has undertaken a number of initiatives to strengthen economic Cooperation with ASEAN countries in area of common interest. India signed a trade in goods agreement with ASEAN in 2009, which became operational from January 1, 2010. Agreement on trade in services and investment as part of FTA are focal area. India is also negotiating a Fee Trade agreement with BIMSTEC.
