Imphal, Aug 8:
Replying to a calling attention motion in the ongoing Assembly session, moved by Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh addressed the case of two teenagers, Phijam Hemanjit and Linthoingambi Hijam, from Sagolband Tera Tongbram Leikai, who disappeared on July 6, 2023. Ranjit emphasized the need to meet the parents’ demands for their children’s remnants.
The case, now under the jurisdiction of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has seen several arrests, including minors. Reports indicate that the mastermind behind the killings has been apprehended in Pune. Despite the filing of a charge sheet, the whereabouts of the teenagers’ remains remain undisclosed.
Replying to the calling attention motion, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh acknowledged the parents’ anguish and their rightful demand for their children’s remnants or belongings. He expressed his empathy, having personally met the grieving families. “It is disheartening to see the guardians. They are asking for at least some remnants of their children, at least their belongings. This is a just demand. They have every right to demand it,” he stated.
CM N. Biren Singh noted that while the state government is actively pursuing the matter with the CBI, they face limitations in direct intervention. “The case is being handled by the CBI due to the state government’s limitations. We are in constant touch with them, but we cannot interfere much. However, we are pursuing the CBI to at least give us some remnants as this is the tradition,” he added.
Phijam Hemanjit’s family has already performed the last rites, but Hijam Linthoingambi’s parents continue to wait for their daughter’s remnants, hoping for closure.
